Development of Multi-Layer Functional Fabric Materials for Ultraviolet and Electromagnetic Radiation Removal and Skin Protection

A three-year NRF-funded program to engineer multi-layer nanomaterial coatings on cotton textiles that combine UV and electromagnetic radiation filtering with a biocompatible, skin-protective microenvironment — layering ZnO nanostructures, MXene/silver nanomaterials, and functionalized gold nanoparticles onto a single fabric.
- 2020–2021Synthesized citrate- and PVA-capped gold nanoparticles and grew ZnO nanostructures on cotton textiles; confirmed fibroblast (L929) biocompatibility of AuNP-citrate coatings.
- 2021–2022Optimized uniform ZnO nanorod growth on textiles, introduced MXene as the electromagnetic-shielding layer, and characterized grafted vs. layered PVA ligand chemistry via zeta potential and DTT adsorption studies.
- 2022–2023Validated AuNP-citrate textiles for consistent cell proliferation across cell densities, modeled nanoparticle loading behavior via adsorption isotherms, and compiled results toward an integrated janus-layer functional textile.
